Black Obsidian (by maggiesloggett)
Obsidian is not a gemstone. It is simply lava that cooled so fast that the minerals contained within didn’t have time to form. It is a naturally occurring glass.
The Aztecs fashioned it flat, square mirrors of this black glass for use in divination. It was a popular material for fashioning stone knives, spear points and arrowheads, and when used for these purposes, such arrowheads have magical properties. Obsidian is a grounding, centering stone. Hold it in your hands when you’re flighty or can’t seem to get your physical life in order. They are strong talismans that offer shielding against any negativity. It develops intuition, insight, and ability to foresee future events. Obsidian protects from “evil eye”, “bedeviling”, sorcery, damnations, and protects wearer in long trips, restores composure after and unfortunate love, guards from infidelity. In the real life, Obsidian protects from any mischief, suppresses aggressive energy, sharpens the mind, and removes stress.
Astrologists think of Obsidian as a stone of Pluto due to its regenerative powers and protective properties. For this very same reason, it is often attributed to Scorpio, a sign that often displays these powers. The energies from this stone also promote transformation and metamorphosis just like the evolution of the Scorpion to Eagle, and then the Phoenix, that Scorpios experience. Human emotions are intensified with the Obsidian, to help focus on true emotions and get rid of superficial ones.
